In 1988, the Anglo-Irish Province was invited to found a mission in Nigeria.

The Order was soon blessed with local vocations and is now a separate Region within the Province with over fifty friars and eleven Houses: Enugu(3) Nsukka, Ekpoma, Ibadan, Abuja, Umueze-Anam, Kurudu, Arochukwu, Uglo-Odogwe.

In October 1974 the Carmelite nuns from Tranquilla (now Knock) established the first Carmel in Nigeria in Owerri. This continues to be a flourishing Carmel. Plans are already under way for the establishment of a new foundation in the capital Abuja.

In Nov 1995, the Carmelite nuns from New Ross established a monastery in Zing in Northern Nigeria. The founding sisters came from Irish, English and Scottish Camels. Presently the Zing Carmel is composed of nine Nigerian sisters with one expatriate remaining.
