17th April - Blessed Baptist Spagnoli of Mantua - Priest

OC: Memory
OCD: Optional Memory

Born in Mantua on 17th April, 1447, as a youth Baptist joined the Carmelites of the Congregation of Mantua at Ferrara. He made his religious profession in 1464 and served in many positions of responsibility in the community; he was vicar general of his congregation six times, and in 1513 was elected prior general of the whole Order. In his own time he was a renowned Christian humanist who brought his richly varied Renaissance poetry into the service of Christ. He used his friendships with scholars as an opportunity of encouraging them to live a Christian life. He died in Mantua on 20th March, 1516.

Entrance Antiphon - Mal 2:6
The teaching of truth was in his mouth, and no wrong was found on his lips; he walked with me in peace and justice, and turned many away from wickedness. (Alleluia).

Opening Prayer
Lord God, you made Our Ladys faithful servant, Blessed Baptist Spagnoli, a preacher of your Gospel by word and example. Through his prayers may we ponder your word in Marys company and praise you with her by the way we live. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

A reading from the book of Wisdom - Wis 7:7-8;10-14;8:2-3
She it was I loved and searched for from my youth.
I prayed, and understanding was given me;
I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.
I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones;
compared with her, I held riches as nothing.
I reckoned no priceless stone to be her peer,
I loved her more than health or beauty,
preferred her to the light,
since her radiance never sleeps.
In her company all good things came to me,
at her hands riches not to be numbered.
All these I delighted in, since Wisdom brings them,
but as yet I did not know she was their mother.
What I learned without self-interest, I pass on without reserve;
I do not intend to hide her riches.
For she is an inexhaustible treasure to men,
and those who acquire it win Gods friendship,
commended as they are to him by the benefits of her teaching.
She it was I loved and searched for from my youth;
I resolved to have her as my bride,
I fell in love with her beauty.
Her closeness to God lends lustre to her noble birth,
since the Lord of all has loved her.

Responsorial Psalm - Ps 15: 1-2a.&5,7-8,11 (R.5a)
R/. You are all my inheritance, O Lord.

Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.
I say to the Lord: You are my God.
O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup;
it is you yourself who are my prize. R/.

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel,
who even at night directs my heart.
I keep the Lord ever in my sight:
since he is at my side I shall stand firm. R/.

You will show me the path of life,
the fullness of joy in your presence,
at your right hand happiness for ever. R/.

Gospel Acclamation - John 8:12b
Alleluia, Alleluia!
I am the light of the world, says the Lord;
anyone who follows me will have the light of life.
Alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew - Mt 5:13-16
Jesus said to his disciples: You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on a lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.

Prayer over the Gifts
Lord, may the gifts we bring to your altar in memory of Blessed Baptist Spagnoli be acceptable to you. Free us from the things that keep us from you and teach us to seek you as our only good. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Communion Antiphon - Col 3:16
Let the word of Christ in its richness live in your hearts; in all wisdom teach and admonish one another; sing gratefully in your hearts to God with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. (Alleluia).

Prayer after Communion
Lord, by the power of this sacrament and the example of Blessed Baptist Spagnoli guide us always in your love. May the good work you have begun in us reach perfection in the day of Christ Jesus who is Lord for ever and ever.
