16th December
Blessed Mary of the Angels, Virgin

OCD: Optional Memory

She was born in Turin (Italy) in 1661 and died in 1717.  In 1675 she entered the Discalced Carmelite Convent of St Christina, and several times filled the offices of Prioress and Novice Mistress. She underwent continual spiritual trials, but was constant nevertheless in her ardent love of God. She was outstandingly faithful to prayer and particularly devoted to St Joseph, in whose honour a convent was founded through her good offices at Moncalieri.

Mass

Entrance Antiphon -
Come, bride of Christ, and receive the crown, which the Lord has prepared for you for ever.

Opening Prayer
Lord,
you have told us that you live for ever
in the hearts of the chaste.
By the prayers of the virgin Blessed Mary of the Angels
help us to live by your grace
and become temples of your Spirit.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Corinthians - 10:17-11:2
I arranged for you to marry Christ so that I might give you away as a chaste virgin to this one husband.

If anyone wants to boast, let him boast of the Lord.  It is not the man who commends himself that can be accepted, but the man who is commended by the Lord.

I only wish you were able to tolerate  little foolishness from me.  But of course: you are tolerant towards me.  You see, the jealousy that I feel for you is God's own jealousy: I arranged for you to marry Christ so that I might give you away as a chaste virgin to this one husband.

The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm - Ps: 148:1-2, 11-13a, 13c-14 (R. Cf. 12a, 13a)
R/. Let us praise the name of the Lord!

Praise the Lord from the heavens,
praise him in the heights.
Praise him, all his angels,

praise him, all his host. R/.

All earth's kings and peoples,
earth's princes and rulers;
young men and maidens,
old men together with children -

let them praise the name of the Lord. R/.

He alone is exalted.
The splendour of his name

reaches beyond heaven and earth. R/.

He exalts the strength of his people.
He is the praise of all his saints,
of the sons of Israel,
of the people to whom he comes close. R/.

Gospel Acclamation - Jn 14-23

Alleluia, Alleluia!
Whoever loves me will keep my word,
and my Father will love him,
and we shall come to him
and make our dwelling-place within him.

Alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 10:38-42
Martha welcomed him into her house.  Mary has chosen the better part.

In the course of their jouney Jesus come to a village, and a woman named Martha welcome him into her house.  She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking.  Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, 'Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself?  Please tell her to help me.'  But the Lord answered: 'Martha, Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one.  It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.'

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
