18th April - Bl. Mary of the Incarnation - Religious
OCD: Optional Memory
Barbe Avrillot was born in Paris in 1566. At the age of sixteen she married Pierre Acarie, by whom she had six children. In spite of her household duties and many hardships, she attained the heights of the mystical life. Under the influence of St Teresas writings, and after mystical contact with the Saint herself, she spared no effort in introducing the Discalced Carmelite nuns into France. After her husbands death, she asked to be admitted among them as a lay sister, taking the name of Mary of the Incarnation; she was professed at the Carmel of Amiens in 1615. She was esteemed by some of the greatest men of her time, including St Francis de Sales: and she was distinguished by her spirit of prayer and her zeal for the propagation of the Catholic faith. She died at Pontoise on 18th April, 1618. For a longer biography CLICK HERE
Entrance Antiphon - Prov 14:1-2
Praise to the holy woman whose home is built on faithful love and whose pathway leads to God. (Alleluia).
Heavenly Father, you gave Blessed Mary of the Incarnation heroic strength in the face of the adversities she met along lifes road, and zeal for the extension of the Carmelite family. May we your children courageously endure every trial and persevere to the end in your love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians - 1:26-31
Take yourselves, brothers, at the time when you were called: how many of you were wise in the ordinary sense of the word, how many were influential people, or came from noble families? No, it was to shame the wise that God chose what is foolish by human reckoning, and to shame what is strong that he chose what is weak by human reckoning; those whom the world thinks common and contemptible are the ones that God has chosen-those who are nothing at all to show up those who are everything.
The human race has nothing to boast about to God, but you, God has made members of Christ Jesus and by Gods doing he has become our wisdom, and our virtue, and our holiness, and our freedom. As scripture says: if anyone wants to boast, let him boast about the Lord.
Responsorial Psalm - Ps 22: 13,4,5,6 (R.1)
R/. The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.
The Lord is my shepherd;
there is nothing I shall want.
Fresh and green are the pastures
where he gives me repose. R/.
Near restful waters he leads me,
to revive my drooping spirit.
He guides me along the right path;
he is true to his name. R/.
If I should walk in the valley of darkness
no evil would I fear.
You are there with your crook and your staff;
with these you give me comfort. R/.
You have prepared a banquet for me
in the sight of my foes.
My head you have anointed with oil;
my cup is overflowing. R/.
Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me
all the days of my life.
In the Lords own house shall I dwell
for ever and ever. R/.
Gospel Acclamation - Jn 15: 9b,5b
Remain in my love, says the Lord;
Whoever remains in me, with me in him,
bears fruit in plenty.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John - 15: 1-8
Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty.
Jesus said to his disciples:
I am the true vine,
and my Father is the vinedresser.
Every branch in me that bears no fruit
he cuts away,
and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes
to make it bear even more.
You are pruned already,
by means of the word that I have spoken to you.
Make your home in me, as I make mine in you.
As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself,
but must remain part of the vine,
neither can you unless you remain in me.
I am the vine,
you are the branches.
Whoever remains in me, with me in him,
bears fruit in plenty;
for cut off from me you can do nothing.
Anyone who does not remain in me
is like a branch that has been thrown away
these branches are collected and thrown on the fire,
and they are burnt.
If you remain in me
and my words remain in you,
you may ask what you will
and you shall get it.
It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit,
and then you will be my disciples.

Communion Antiphon - Mt 12:50
Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother, says the Lord. (Alleluia).
